Death and desire at the French cabaret

ChromeAudio is delighted to release All I Want is One Night, a wonderful album of French cabaret songs in new English versions written and performed by Jessica Walker with Joseph Atkins on piano.  With numbers from Brel, Barbara, and Jessica’s play about cabaret sensation Suzy Solidor – All I Want is One Night – it is a bewitching listen.

Little known today, the charismatic, enigmatic cabaret star, Suzy Solidor, was famous in her time.  Many of the greatest artists of the 20th century – de Lempicka, Bacon, Cocteau and Man Ray to name a few – flocked to paint her.  Her best-selling recording of Lily Marlène, released a year before Dietrich’s, was taken up as an anthem by German and Allied soldiers alike.  But, at the end of the War, accused of collaboration with the Nazis, she was forced to leave France.  When she returned, the music scene had moved on.  Once more, the ageing diva reinvented herself, living out her final years cross-dressed as an admiral in the south of France, where she sold antiques.

Jessica’s play about Suzy Solidor – All I Want is One Night – premiered at Manchester’s Royal Exchange Theatre in 2016 to sell-out audiences and is at Wilton’s Music Hall, London for a limited run from 27 June to 1 July 2017.
